Started revising drafts of snapshot moments today.  Looked out the strategy of "branching", to add detail.  Students are to look for at least 2 spots where they can add a front, middle or end branch to their writing.   Circle any words that could be substituted with a stronger, more precise word.   Picture Day tomorrow!

Drafts of Snapshot moments must be completed for tomorrow.  Remember to write in the present tense. We will start revising tomorrow.

We worked with a mentor text from Jerry Spinelli's Maniac Magee.  We were highlighting "Show Don't Tell" in writing.  Students began their own personal snapshot moments in their Writer's Notebook.  They are to practice the writing strategies used in the past 2 weeks to create their own piece of writing.  Students will be given class time to draft, but they should also work at home.  Drafts will be due Wednesday and revision strategies will be part of this week's lessons. Students should have something started in their Writer's Notebooks and be ready to write tomorrow with focus.

No homework unless assignments are not in yet.   Start thinking about a moment that you can write about for your snapshot moment.

Review of strategies for "slowing down time" and "voice in writing".  Used Mentor texts "Violet" and "Night"  and Donald Mills(handouts)   Studied mentor text "Tell Tale Heart" excerpt (Edgar Allan Poe) for conventional artistry and the ability to show "voice" in writing.  Looked at dashes, exclamation marks and italics.   Response to Donald Mills due Friday. 1/2 page -3/4 page letter responding to his blog "The Problem with Young People Today..." Use the strategies he uses to create voice in writing.  Write from perspective of a sterotypical teenager.

Collected assignments that were due today.   Explored "voice" in writing by comparing 2 different versions of the same song- Close Your Eyes by James Taylor and 2nd version by Carly Simon, Ben and Sally Taylor   Looked at the blog:  The Problem with Young People Today... by Donald Mills to study "voice" in writing.
