The twentieth annual Miramichi Hoop Classic was held at
James M. Hill and Miramichi Valley High School this past weekend. The sixteen team tournament saw the Sussex
Lady Sonics knock off the Rothesay Redhawks to bring home the banner on the
girls’ side of the tournament. The
hometown James M. Hill Tommies held off the Bernice MacNaughton Highlanders to
capture the boys’ championship.
The Miramichi Valley Pulamoo boys squad posted two wins
and a loss to capture the consolation final on the boys side of the
tournament. The Pulamoo were dropped 63 –
36 by Bernice MacNaughton of Moncton in
their opening game on Friday afternoon.
Travis Valanne led the way for the Pulamoo with a game high 13
points. Michael Tozer chipped in with 12
and Brett Gallant added 9. The
Highlanders were sparked by Morgan Tatlock and Brett Pierce with 9 points
apiece.
The Pulamoo bounced back in their second game of the day
on Friday to knock off the Bathurst High Phantoms by a score of 62 – 58. Travis Valanne once again lead the Pulamoo
with 12 points and Brett Gallant netted 10.
The Phantoms were led by the 20 point performance of Nicholas
MacDonald. Jamie Oldford added 17 in the
loss.
On Saturday, the Pulamoo knocked off the Dalhousie
Condors by a score of 72 – 55 in the consolation final. Mitchell Landry stepped up with a great game
and scored 18 points to lead the way for the winners. Travis Valanne and Brett Gallant both dropped
in 11 apiece for the Pulamoo. The
Condors were led by the 24 point performance of Cody Gallie and Brady Oakes
netted 16.
The Pulamoo will return to action this weekend when the
travel to Rothesay to participate in the Redhawks’ Invitational tournament.
