MVHS Student Earns Duke of Edinburgh Award

Posted: February 19, 2021

Please join the MVHS community in congratulating Bryan Comeau, who has received the Bronze Standard for the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

At age 14, Bryan chose to participate in the award and actively pursue objectives toward, physical and emotional wellness, as well as becoming an active contributor to his community.

In order to achieve the Bronze Standard, Bryan successfully completed a physical activity, a leisure activity, an active service, and an adventurous journey.  This required his active participation on a weekly basis for a period spanning up to 26 weeks.

As an active member of the Miramichi Whitecaps Swimming team, Bryan achieved many personal bests during this time and consistently encouraged his team mates to reach their swimming objectives.  Always with high spirits, he supported his peers and demonstrated good sportsmanship toward other competitors and officials.

During the time of the award, Bryan was an active member of Scouts Canada, and actively pursued his leadership skills by working with others to ensure that they had positive and enriching experiences during weekly meetings and outings.  He helped set up a community garden with youth from his scouting group and members of an organization in Miramichi.  As well, he organized a first aid and CPR session for youth and worked with the Heart and Stroke foundation who donated Mini Anne CPR mannequins to the group so that they may learn and practice basic CPR skills.

Bryan also actively participated in the Chess Club hosted at Gretna Green school during his grade 8 year.  He often sought to enhance his game play by challenging experienced players and sometime staff. At the same time, he always ensured to support the newer players by offering them words of encouragement and offer game play tips after their matches.

To complete his adventurous journey requirement, Bryan worked with his fellow scouts and completed a 2 day and one night hike. This provided many learning opportunities for the youth about wilderness survival, but also allowed each to demonstrate leadership skills and working as a team to accomplish common objectives.

At this time, he is actively pursuing the Silver Standard for this award. It goes without saying that we are very proud of Bryan, of his accomplishments, and of the character that he demonstrates each day.
