Word collage. Write the title of the book in the center of a sheet of paper. Then look through magazines for words, phrases, and sentences that illustrate or tell something about your book. As you look, think in terms of the theme, setting, plot line, as well as characters. Work to get fifty such words, phrases, or sentences so the whole sheet of paper will be covered. The visual impact of the collage should tell a potential reader a lot about the book. Pass in a one page (Typed, Font 12, TNR, Double Spaced) reflection of how your collage went, what elements of the novel you tried to focus on, what you want your collage to say about the novel, etc. Theme Display.  Create a physical display (poster, graphic comic, sculpture, painting) which clearly illustrates the theme of the novel.  It cannot be computer generated.  Pass in a one and a half page (Typed, Font 12, TNR, Double Spaced) explanation of how your piece captures the theme and what elements of the novel inspired you to create what you did. Comparison.  Read the story “The Open Boat” by Stephen Crane.  Complete a close reading of the story in which you compare and contrast it to The Old Man and the Sea.  You should focus on thematic elements. Provide detailed marginal notes with corresponding references from the novel.   Pass in a two page (Typed, Font 12, TNR, Double Spaced) discussion of what you found .
