 English 122 Personal Essay on The Old Man and the Sea  The theme of the novel is 'A man can be destroyed but not defeated'.The character of Santiago embodies this theme with his never quit, never be negative attitude.  He is very much an optimist.  The question is, what are you?  Are you an optimist or a pessimist?  Is the glass half full or half empty?In a 3-page personal essay, describe, with specific examples, your outlook on life - pessimist or optimist. Report cards are going home today.  The mark for English is based on 250 marks worth of tests and assignments completed to date.  Next week students have an additional 200 marks worth of assignments coming in (essay on November 24 = 100, creative extension on November 26 = 50, and video project on November 26 = 50).  It is important that deadlines are met and students pass in all work.
Pass your essay in early for MLA check.

If you missed the test on Acts 4 and 5, you will write it Monday at noon. Finsh reading the first 28 pages of The Old Man and the Sea for Monday.  Complete the following: The Old Man and the Sea  pages 9-25 1. State the first line of the novel.  What does it say about 
the individual and the world? 2. What does “salao” mean? What role does it play in life? 3. Who is Santiago?  Describe him. 4. How old was the young boy when Santiago first took 
him on a boat? Describe the relationship between 
Santiago and Manolin. 5. Describe Santiago’s home (p. 15). 6. In what month do the great fish come? 7. Who would Santiago like to take fishing?  Why? 8. Describe Santiago’s dreams (pp.24/25). 9.
