Fly Fishing ShowThis week we brought in our gear to work on the reel, fly line and leader.  We practiced our knots and discussed the plans for the May 24/25 (Fly Fishing & Sportsman Show) and May 31/June 1 (Youth Fly Fishing Forum) events.  Reminder that registrations are due to Mr. Hallihan by Friday, May 17th!!!
May 24 & 25This week we discussed the two big events that are happening at the end of month...1)  Miramichi Fly Fishing and Sportsman Show (May 24/25) AND 2) Youth Fly Fishing Forum (May 31/June 1).  The Fly Fishing Club will be involved with both of these events.  Be sure to let Mr. Hallihan know if you can't be involved on any of these dates.  We are looking for club members to work a fly tying booth and a fly casting booth for the show.  We also discussed the gear needed for the June 1 fishing trip.  Be sure to let Mr. Hallihan know if you are in need of certain gear.

Fly Fishing ShowThis week we worked on mastering the blood and turle knots.  We also watched a video on fly fishing techniques that focused on casting and knot tying.  Reminder that we will now meet regularly on Tuesday's...next week we hope to get outside to do some casting so bring your rod/reel if you have one.  Check out the details on the upcoming Fly Fishing Show in Miramichi at the Curling Club on May 24 & 25.  Lots of great exhibits and opportunities to learn all things salmon fishing...hope to see everyone there!!!
Time For CastingThis past Thursday we discussed the design of a fly rod and a fly line.  We checked out the video from Temple Fork Outfitters on the Office Rods that we recently purchased.  Lefty Kreh gives some instruction on casting.  Here is the video...  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPIxJUWtLMsWe went up into the Mez and tried to put the theory into action with our practice rods.  We plan to meet next week on Wednesday.  Reminder to pay your club fee by next week.
Turle KnotA few weeks back we tied some #2 flies where each student picked a pattern of their choice to be put in this year's shadow box.  Now we will take a break from fly tying and we have started some fly fishing activities.  This past Wednesday we worked on both the blood knot and turle knot.  Check out the following videos to practice them... Open up the attached file to check out the collection of bugs that were tied this week...  Daniel had to leave early with his green machines while Jonathon and Bronson spent more time looking for keys than tying bugs!

River MapWe are planning to fish the Main Southwest Miramichi on Monday, July 23rd.  All club members are to meet at the Nine Pine for 7:15.  Be sure to bring your license and all your gear.  BBQ will be provided at the Hallihan's camp.  Click on the image to look at the river map of the section that we will be fishing...
In this session we finalized the details of our trip...here was the fishing groups: Canoe/Fish... -  Dale Taylor, Rebecca Taylor, Carly Russell and Micaela Hachey -  Jeff Wilson, Cody Stewart, Adam Travis and John McNally -  Ashley Hallihan and James Strang   River Guides... -  Jason Curtis, Jennifer Curtis, Emma Freeze and Kayla Arseneault -  Rick Hayward, Keith Comeau, Natalie Whitney, Dylan Ward, Jacob Smith and Stephen Miller -  Kevin Ross, Kyle Ross, Jacob Ashton and Thomas Sturgeon   Many thanks goes out to MSA and ASF for once again giving all students memberships to their organization.  Also, I would like to thank those who donated prizes for a draw where all members walked away with something.   Thanks goes out to... Nola Chiasson from MSA, Sydney Mattchett from Trout Brook Fly Shop and George Routledge from George's Fly Shop.  Much appreciated by all club members!!!
Northwest Trip: June 3rdThis week we discussed the details of our trip.  I have attached the schedule with the meeting times.  We also equipped our reels and tied some flies for our flybox.  School waivers and trip information is due by next Tuesday.  In this meeting we will be doing some draws and finalizing the details of the trip.
In this session (May 8) we discussed some of the 'unwritten rules' when it comes to the sport of fly fishing.  We looked at how to rotate through a pool, how to read the water and how to live release a fish.  We also planned out the details for our upcoming trip to the Northwest Miramichi on Sunday, June 3rd.
RYLA MiramichiLast Friday we had 8 club members instruct lessons on fly tying to the participants of the Rotary Youth Leadership Conference at the Douglastown Community Centre.  Thanks goes out to those members involved who included:  Avery Gilks, Micaela Hachey, Brandon McKay, John McNally, Tyler Mullin, Carly Russell, Jacob Smith and Adam Travis.  It was a great event for everyone!
This week Jason did some further practice with tying our common knots...the turle, the clinch, the blood and the nail.  I worked with those students who will be leading some fly tying lessons this Friday at the Rotary Youth Conference that is being hosted in Miramichi.  Next week we are practicing our fly casting techniques outside on the rugby field.  We are also planning to have instruction on how to cast a spey rod.  Be sure to check it out!
All about the clock...Last Tuesday we went out on the rugby field to practice our casting techniques.  We did the...1) single haul  2) false cast  3)  looping  and 4)  double haul.  We are hoping (weather permitting) to get back out to work on these techniques again and possibly learn how to cast a spey rod.  Reminder that the club fee is due before our next meeting...
