We have started a new writing unit on argument and persuasion.   We did a pretest demand writing piece on manners, and then looked a a mentor text piece on the same topic. Romorrow we will be doing a reading comprehension practice quiz as well as looking at another argument mentor piece. Next week, we will start writing our own argument pieces.

Today we looked at different style of leads with mentor texts.  We also practiced creating some as a group.   Homework:  Have 2 snapshots completed for tomorrow from the place extended narrative.   Upcoming this week:  1.  Drafts for extended narrative to be passed in on Thursday. 2.  Practice close reading of "Eleven" to be given tomorrow and handed in on Wednesday.  Worth marks 3.  Close reading test:  Read like a Writer- Modeled after the "Eleven" close reading. 4.  Good copies of extended narratives due next Thursday.

Today we read the short story "A Sound of Thunder" by Ray Bradbury.  We will work in groups tomorrow to look at his craft and style as a writer. We worked on the strategy and writing skill of "show, don't tell". Quick write:  Change the telling sentence into a showing paragraph: The dog is old.   Homework:  Work on snapshot moment. Close reading of mentor text Maniac McGee (see attached) Highlight and label where the author uses description to "show, not tell".  Highlight and label where the author uses strategies to slow down time.  Find at least 8-10.  Due Friday.
