Please consider the following characters:  Ponyboy, Darry, Dally, Johnny, Cherry.  Provide proof that they should be considered heroes. Some characters will have more than one piece of proof! In the organizer below you have some examples of how these characters were heroes (You do not need to include page numbers as you do not have a copy of the book).  You may add your own examples as well.

I have uploaded notes on Important Events from each chapter, you may need to refer to these to help you with your assignment.

Assignment: Answer the questions; What does it mean to be a hero? And What qualities or character traits do heroes possess? Complete a list of heroic character traits for each of the characters listed below; Ponyboy, Darry, Johnny, Cherry, Dallas & Randy.  Then choose One character and write a 3-5 paragraph essay on why you feel they are the hero of The Outsiders.  If you would like feedback submit early to your teacher and you will have opportunity to fix your piece and resubmit.

Write a newspaper article about either the night Bob was killed or the church fire where the boys save the children.  Attached are some planning sheets and a template to do the newspaper.  Stick to the facts, but you can be creative with quotes from people that may not be in the book.

You will write at least one six word memoir for each character in The Outsiders.  Attached are some examples.  Try not to just focus on looks, but also the character's personality.  We will do this at the end of the novel to see if any characters have changed.  Ms. Lynch will be putting up Chapter 6 soon.
