Language Arts 9

On Friday, we discussed chapter 1 & 2 with "One question/one comment".  We also looked at 6 Word Memoirs and created one through the eyes of one of the characters in The Outsiders.   Ex:  Ponyboy's 6 word memoir:  I don't believe my own lies.         Darry's 6 word memoir:  Lost a family; gained new one.         Johnny's 6 word memoir:  Scared to walk alone; half dead.   Homework:  Create a six word memoir from the perspective of one of the charcters.

Language Arts 9

Quick write:  Do you think Ponyboy is being fair when he talks about his brother Darry? We compared slang from the era of The Outsiders with slang used today.  Finish Chapter 2 and make sure the characterization chart is filled in for the physical characteristics.

Language Arts 9

We have started the new semester with The Outsiders novel study.  To get students familiar with the time ad setting of the novel, we are doing an assignment about the different aspects of the 50's and 60's.  We are creating a visual time capsule about the hair styles, fashion, politics, family life, cars, music and careers of the era.  See attched for the assignment.   Due:  Wednesday, February 5, 2013

Today we did a mini lesson on conclusions for the 5 paragraph essay.  We looked at effective closing statements or thoughts by studying and discussing examples.   Homework for tomorrow:  Introduction and 3 body paragraphs to be completed.   Good copy of 5 paragraph essay is due for Friday, November 30, 2012

Today we worked on how to do an introductory paragraph for the persuasive essay. We read and discussed some mentor text leads and started drafting the introductory paragraph for the Electronic Devices piece.   Don't forget: 1.  Hook 2.  Position statement 3.  Road map of argument ideas.   Introductory paragraph due tomorrow.

We have been working on our first persuasive writing piece this year.  In response to the mentor text, "Turn Off the Phone (and the Tension)", students are asked to consider the following question: Do you feel that the amount of time you spend using electronic devices is an effective way to spend your time.  Why or why not? The students will be responding to this question in a five paragraph essay.  We are currently in the prewriting stage of the writing process.  Students used t-charts to assess both sides of the issue and are now using a position/support web to map out their essays.

Language Arts 9: November 13, 2012

Today, we discussed the part that social networking plays in our lives.  We read an argument mentor text called "Turn off the Phone (and the Tension)" from the New York Times.  It lead to some interesting class discussion about electronic devices and the mini-society that exists online.  For homework (due tomorrow), students are to track the amount of time that they spend on electronic devices and we will be discussing tomorrow.
