Is it October already? How did that happen? This is what we have been up to in class lately:

Period 1: English 10
By the end of this week, we will have read chapters 1-5 of Flight by Sherman Alexie. Students have time in class each day to work on the questions that go along with the chapters. All assignments are on Powerschool and marks are up to date.

Period 2: English 113
By the end of this week, we will have read chapters 1-6 of The Contender by Robert Lipsyte. Students have time in class each day to work on the questions/creative extensions that go along with the chapters. All assignments are on Powerschool and marks are up to date.

Period 4: Indigenous Studies 120
We have been spending the last couple of weeks getting ready for Orange Shirt Day and learning about the impact that residential schools had on Indigenous families and Indigenous culture. Students were given many journal prompts to write about in class (journals are worth 10% of their grade so attendance is important for these marks). All assignments are on Powerschool and marks are up to date.

If you have any questions, please contact me anytime at katie.tozer@nbed.nb.ca. Students are also welcome to contact me through Microsoft Teams.

Welcome back to MVHS! The first two weeks of classes have flown by! This is what students have been working on in my classes so far:

Period 1: English 10
Students have been doing research on Native American History. They have each chosen a topic and are creating a PowerPoint presentation on what they have learned. This will tie into the novel that we are starting next week - Flight by Sherman Alexie. It is one of my favorite books!

Period 2: English 113
Students spent the first few days of class reading the short story The Sniper by Liam O'Flaherty and answering comprehension questions. We are getting ready to read the novel The Contender by Robert Lipsyte. To prepare for this, we listened to the song The Boxer by Simon and Garfunkel and had a class discussion about how even if things are hard, you should always keep fighting through life.

Period 4: Indigenous Studies 120
We started off the semester by discussing appropriate terminology. We read an essay by Chelsea Vowel that helped us to understand this a little bit more. Attendance and participation in this class is extremely important in order to have success. There are small in-class assignments/journal entries each day in class. Students can use PowerSchool to keep track of what assignments they owe for this class.

To the grads: We are excited to announce that we are preparing for our graduation exercises.  We have ordered all graduates a gown, sash, hat and tassel.  These are yours to keep.  This grad package will be used by grads several times during the month of June for official MVHS graduation activities, including graduation on June 17th.  For this reason, we ask that you keep these items in good order and with no visual alterations.  To pick up the grad package, the school will be open on Thursday, May  21st from 9-12 for grads or parents only.  Grads or parents will use the main doors.  Social distancing and safety precautions will be required and enforced.  We will be contacting grads shortly to share more graduation details.  Take care and congrats to the MVHS grads of 2020.
