My English 122 classes recently completed a unit on sonnets. Check out the following work:
The Notorious, Disease Ridden Baby Killer
by Sanora Matchett
He’s twisting, diving and stalking his prey.
He strikes, ripping through cotton flesh with glee.
A shark in my sock drawer, to my dismay,
He is the king of the carpeted sea.
The brave adventurer scours mountains high,
Demolishing dishes and homework books.
No stopping him now, I think with a sigh.
“Who could stay mad at you with those good looks?”
I can’t find my heart and I’m late for work.
‘Round the corner he runs with a scamper,
The petty thief dances with a sly smirk.
I found it stashed in the laundry hamper.
Naughty or not, he could never displace
My endless love for that ferrety face.
Seasonsby Samantha Baker
Spring came, the same as it had always come.It was nothing new, but you were. You changedMy world — the warm wind was comforting, glumRains no longer so dreary in my eyes.Autumn rolled around, the spring worn and spent,And the leaves whithered and fell from the trees; All of it turned to nothing and you wentWith them, despite all my desperate pleas.I tried to forget, but the roots of youHave now grown — around my ribcage and thenThey sprouted flowers just beneath my twoCollarbones; my body's become a glen. The snow is melting, Spring is on her way;Why does ti still feel like an Autumn day?
Silken Trap
By Jennifer Bell
Like a shiny, silver gossamer song,
Intricate pattern, woven perfectly,
Dew laden pearls heavy with morning dawn,
Drawn with quiet patience, diligently.
With nature's loom the spider's spinnerets
Spin a web forcing forth a filament,
Strings of strong, sticky spider silky jets,
Carefully nurtured and lovingly meant.
With the surrounding space vacant and vast
Thus will begin the fated dance of death.
Preys encapsulation in mummy's cast,
Soon struggles cease with life's last basic breath.
Such beautiful, perfectly sculptured lines,
Laden heavily, ominous design.
