The McEwen Scholarship was founded by Co-op Atlantic to honour the memory of W.H. McEwen, the organization's first General Manager. McEwen considered education of the utmost importance, including topics which addressed how co-operatives fulfill their social and economic responsibilities to the community. The McEwen Scholarship is an entrance scholarship awarded to two undergraduate university students each year. The scholarship is allocated in the amount of $1,000 per year for up to four years, for a maximum value of $4,000. The objectives of the scholarship are as follows: To improve understanding and knowledge about co-operative issues and co-operative organizations; and To fulfill one aspect of Co-op Atlantic's socioeconomic responsibilities to the community by assisting deserving students in reaching their educational goals. The Harrison McCain Scholarships/Bursaries are available annually to entering students attending University who have graduated from a high school in Canada. Each award has a program value of $16,000 payable over a four year course of study in the amount of $4,000 per year. Criteria for the awards include a minimum 80% average in senior year of high school, financial need, leadership qualities, and a recognized initiative in funding your own education. The number of scholarships/bursaries available may vary from year to year. Renewal criteria to be met each year. Deadline March 1

The Scholarship for Visible Minorities for $1,500 is open to all visible minority students who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education full-time in 2013 - 2014 and who are the children or foster children of a National Union of Public and General Employees member. It will be awarded for the best 750 - 1,000 word essay on: The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of visible minorities. • Deadline: June 30, 2013

The Scholarship for Aboriginal Canadians for $1,500 is open to all Aboriginal Canadian students who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2013 - 2014 and who are the children or foster children of a NUPGE member. It will be awarded for the best 750 - 1,000 word essay on: The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of Aboriginal Canadians. • Deadline: June 30, 2013

The Terry Fox Memorial Scholarship for $1,500 is open to all students with disabilities who plan to enter the first year of a Canadian public post-secondary education institution full-time in 2013 - 2014 and who are the children or foster children of a member of the NUPGE. It will be awarded for the best 750 - 1,000 word essay on: The importance of quality public services in enhancing the quality of life of people with disabilities. • Deadline: June 30, 2013
