Most weeks this semester, you will receive an Article of the Week.  The purpose of this activity is to broaden your reading experiences into more real-world text.  This will expand your background knowledge, which will help you when analyzing literature in class.  Also, it is important for you to think critically about things that are happening in our world. For each Article of the Week, you will perform two tasks: 1. Close reading of the article2. Opinion response on a question at the end of the article.

Writing 110: Today, we spoke more about snapshot moments and watched some examples from film.  We started brainstorming topics for our own writing piece.  Please have a topic ready for tomorrow.   English 10: Colours of Conviction: Because students are going to be writing personal essays, we have been speaking about convictions.  Today, the students listed some of their convictions and have chosen one to be represented symbolically.  The visual is due on Wednesday. Colours of Conviction Assignment (instructions given in class) For this assignment, create a visual representation or symbol that represents a conviction in your life or something you "know for sure". Be sure to incorporate colour in your piece. You must also include a written piece that explains your conviction. You are being marked on how well your visual represents the conviction and on your written explanation of the conviction.

Writing 110: Today we spent some time "reading like writers".  We looked at an excerpt from Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner and examined the strategies that he used to create a snapshot moment.  Excellent work!   English 10: Today we looked at another mentor text of a personal essay.  In groups, the students dissected the text, looking for evidence of the write traits that pertain to personal essays.  They also came up with improvements for each of the traits.   Please pick up a hard cover writers notebook over the weekend!

Welcome back to all of our students and parents!  The students have all received course outlines that indicate any special supplies that are needed for their courses.  For English 10 and Writing 110, it is very important that students have a hard cover writers notebook.  These can be purchased at the Dollarstore, Walmart, Staples, etc.
