Puzzle Number 6

How often have we said to somebody that we care about, "Don't be so hard on yourself"?  Most of us have an easier time of being compassionate toward somebody we care about before we can do the same for ourselves.  The activity this week asks us to stop and consider why we may be harder on ourselves and provides us with prompts to be mindful of self-compassion.  Open the link below and complete the exercise shared on the Self-Compassion website by Dr. Kristin Neff.  You can email your answers to me at andrea.bowes@nbed.nb.ca

We are now ready to begin Unit 4: Digestion.  The attachments below include PDF files of the Smart notes, textbook unit and the exercises.  Complete the exercises and email your answers to me.

Rainbow Walk Activity

Now that the weather is getting better, time spent outside helps to clear the mind.  Often, when we go for a walk, we lose ourselves in our thoughts.  The rainbow walk activity helps us to be mindful of the process of the walk itself.  Recall the colors of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet).  As you walk, find things that represent each of the colors.  Write them down, sketch them or take a picture of them.  Once you have located something for each of the colors, start the list again.

Section 6.3: Slope and Rate of Change

Attached you will find the information that provides connections between Slope and Rate of Change (PDF format).  Watch the attached videos first and then read the notes.  That will prepare you to do the questions.

Section 6.1 What is Slope?

Watch the following videos.  They will offer an explanation of slope and the various formulae used to calculate slope.

Slope Definition

Slope Formulae

Slope is the numerical representation of the steepness of a line (think of a ramp, staircase or road).  It is the vertical distance between two points on a line compared to the horizontal distance between the same two points.  It can be represented as a fraction or decimal.

Watch the following videos to see examples of the calculation of slope.

Slope Rise Over Run

Slope From Graph

Once you have watched the videos, open the attachment below.  It includes additional explanation and practice questions for the calculation of slope (Answers are included as well).
