Our grade nine boys in The Outsiders

Posted: February 1, 2013

Welcome to Writing 110!  It is important that students purchase a hard cover writers notebook this weekend.  You can buy them at the dollar store, Walmart, Staples, etc.  Also, try to finish the title page for your writing portfolio.

Welcome back, grade nine!  We are beginning a novel study of S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders.  Over the past two days, we have been studying the context (setting) of our novel.  We are currently working on a time capsule assignment, where students focus on a particular aspect of the 1950s or early 1960s, research it, and present it as a visual.

The students have been working on grammar handbooks in class to help them prepare for the ELPA next week.  These handbooks must be finished for Monday - no exceptions!  The students were told to do some work on them over the weekend.

This document shows you the rooms of writing and scheduling of the ELPA.  Grade nine students have been given this information and it will also be posted on the wall outside of my room.

A reminder to parents that the students will be writing their ELPA (English Language Proficiency Assessment) on Tuesday, January 15th (periods 1,2,4,5) and Wednesday, January 16th (period 1).  As you know, Mrs. Mac and I have focused our attention this semester on preparing the students for this assessment.  The students have one final assignment to complete - a writing craft and mechanics handbook.  By creating the book, they will be reviewing the writing concepts that we've covered this semester.  The book is due on Monday.

Homework: Please finish your cross-out poems for tomorrow.  They should be placed in your writers notebook. This week, all grade nine students will be completing a mock reading assessment.  We want students to have more practice with the style of questions that they will see on the ELPA.  Like the reading portion of the ELPA, this is a multiple choice assessment.  The students will be given their marks so that they can see areas of improvement that are necessary.  It will also allow Mrs. Mac and I to see if there are any particular areas that need more teaching.  The assessment will start tomorrow.

Today, the students shared their Wordberry Pies.  Very creative!  For tomorrow, be sure to complete the wordberry pie reflection.
